Kappa alpha pdf
If more than one are to be initiated, they should be separated far enough apart to give the impression of being alone. When all is in readiness, the guide leads the candidate to the door of the assembly room where he meets the Lieutenant Strategus. They await the sound of thunder and lightning from inside of the assembly room. Complete silence is maintained until this time. The Lieutenant Strategus, guides and candidates are on the outside of the assembly room.
Sounds of thunder and lightning are made within the assembly room. The Lieutenant Strategus gives two sharp raps on the door and follows this immediately by several raps made in rapid succession giving the effect of a rumble. He awaits the answering rumble from the inside of the door, made by the Strategus, and then gives two sharp raps.
The Strategus now brings the Lieutenant Strategus, candidate and guide into the assembly room to a place in front of the Polemarch.
POLEMARCH Barbarian, you have indicated by your pledge a desire to become a member of this Fraternity; but before you are permitted to enter, are you willing to swear a solemn oath to keep secret forever everything that may transpire or be revealed to you during your initiation? I ……………………….. Another alarm is sounded at the gate.
Three members acting as ambassadors rap twice sharply on the door and give a rumble after a short pause. The Strategus gives the answering rumble which is followed by two sharp raps by the ambassador. The Strategus opens the door and turns to address the Polemarch. Pray tell us what your journey has enabled you to find out about this unhappy affair. The Thracians without provocation carried our Brother away into captivity, treated him cruelly, and now declare that, inasmuch as he slew three of them with his spear before they were able to overpower him, they will put him to death today and offer him as a sacrifice to Ares, their God.
Members utter expressions of sorrow and resentment over their news. Their only reply was that long before any League assembled our Brother would be sacrificed to the Thracian God. However, they promised us finally that they would grant our Brother liberty if another be sent as a sacrifice in his place. The Lieutenant Strategus prompts the candidate to say that he will die for this member.
Members still insist upon being permitted to go. ALL marvel at the remarkable spirit of Fraternity which the Pledge manifests. Addressing the Strategus Lead forth the sacrifice to his fate. The Strategus escorts the Lt. Strategus, pledge and guide to the door. The Lt. Strategus and guide lead the pledge to another part of the building while the assembly room or another is being prepared as the abode of the Thracians.
Inside the entrance of this room, there should be displayed prominently, clubs, paddles, switches, a burning fire with a branding iron, a rope made into a noose and other instruments of torture. The members acting as Thracians should be noisy, wrangling and boisterous in sharp contrast to the quiet dignity of the Grecian assembly. After the pledge has been disoriented, the Lt.
Strategus, pledge and guide approach the door of the abode of the Thracians. The noise and raucous laughter within makes it necessary to rap sharply on the door.
Upon being admitted, the blindfold is removed from the pledge's eyes so that he sees the display of the instruments of torture. Nothing is said or done to direct his attention to these instruments. Therefore, deliver the Greek to me as thou engaged thyself to do.
He may be but a captive slave whose life would not answer for a Greek's. The Greek is a worthy sacrifice. He has withstood without a word of anguish all of the tortures the Thracians know. Addressing the Pledge Barbarian, you may go free and we will kill the Greek unless you are willing to withstand the tortures that he has.
Strategus I wish to take the place of this Greek. This one will sadly rue the day that he was delivered to Thracians. Bind his eyes so he may not look upon the horrors that await him and lead him to the torture chambers. Fellow Tribesmen, within the hour we must offer to the Great Ares the sacrifice. We must hasten this victim through the tortures so manfully withstood by the Greek. Strategus blindfolds the pledge before they leave the Thracians making sure the instruments of torture have been seen No comment should be made.
The pledge is led away and permitted to sit alone in absolute quiet while the preparations for the tests are being completed. Great care must be taken to see that the test tube is not hot enough to burn the skin. The effect of the illusion may be heighten if the spot where the test tube touches is covered with a small piece of adhesive. When all is in readiness, the guide helps the pledge remove his shoes and socks and strip to the waist.
Care should be taken to see that the pledge is not exposed to cold. In this condition, the pledge is led to the door of the torture chamber where he can hear what is going on within. In another room members have completed the preparation for the third test. After a suitable interval of absolute silence, a designated member strikes the floor, table or cushion a heavy blow with a strap.
At the same time another member cries out as if in pain. If there are more than one pledge, this device may be repeated a number of times one less than the number being initiated. Each pledge is kept separated from the others in silence and the one waiting at the door may feel that he is listening to the others being tortured.
The pledge is rushed into the room and made to bend over. A designated member stands in readiness with a ribbon wet in ice water sufficiently dried that it does not drip held over the bowed back of the pledge. If the suspense has been carefully built up and absolute quiet maintained, the pledge is likely to yell in pain.
The reaction of the pledge to these tests can not be appreciated unless quiet is maintained at the time of the application. The first portion is moistened slightly and kept at room temperature. The second portion is heated but is insufficiently hot to cause injury to the feet. A pan of ice water, preferably containing cracked ice, is prepared. These three items are placed on the floor one stride apart. The pledge is instructed to take three fatal steps. He first steps onto sand at room temperature, the second stride is on the hot sand, and the third is on the pan of water.
The pledge is then permitted to dress and returned to the temple of Thracian priest. The altar is prepared and a candle furnishes the only illumination. The pledge is stretched out prone on the floor with his head directed toward the altar.
The blindfold is removed. Standing guard over the pledge is an executioner with a sword. The priest enters. The pledge is immediately led to another part of the room to take the second test. In the presence of the pledge, he experiments with branding iron on a piece of raw meat so that the pledge may get the odor of burning flesh. Another designated member has a test tube containing a little hot water in the end. At a given signal, the pledge is grasped and held firmly with his back to the brander and as the wire is placed upon the raw meat the other member places the rounded end of PRIEST Gods.
Then with these holy hands apply I the flame of the The Priest flashes the bulb covered with red cellophane or turns on a red light. This business takes place on the table top beyond the range of vision of the pledge. He can only see the red light come on.
Show forth thy divine approval by now flaring forth another red flame of light. The Priest now flashes the bulb covered with blue cellophane. All of the Thracians become suddenly horrified and interpret the failure of the Gods to send another red flame as an indication of their disapproval of the sacrifice which the Thracians offer.
Members still murmur signs of fear. This sacrifice must be loosed and freed. Another sacrifice must be found. We dare not put to death whom the Gods protect. Take him immediately to his own land. The pledge is now blindfolded again and taken back to the Grecian Assembly.
An alarm at the gate. The Strategus will do his duty. They have brought him hither to escape the wrath of their Gods. The pledge is brought forth. Right nobly hast thou quit thyself today. Thou hast found favor in the sight of barbarian Gods.
Now, sit thee down and let us determine whether thou art fit to share the glory and privileges of a member of this noble clan. Fetch forth from the archives, good Keeper of Records, the sacred scroll wherein are writ all the high and holy purposes which find lodgement in the breast of every loyal member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
The above motto must be written in Greek. Read the great document and thus familiarize thyself with Grecian ideals and manifest to us the fluency of thy wit in interpreting Grecian scrolls. All of the officers and members are properly dressed and positioned. The pledge is unblindfolded and is allowed to examine the scroll. He is unable to read the Greek due to the peculiar arrangement of the inscription.
Strategus Exalted Polemarch, I cannot read this scroll. It appears then, that thou art lacking in knowledge. Therefore, if thou desirest fellowship with us thy only hope lies in going to the Great Oracle of Delphi yonder on Mount Parnassus and there obtain the knowledge which thou lackest.
Is thy desire for knowledge and membership in Kappa Alpha Psi is great enough induce thee to make this trip? Let us seek the abode of the mighty Oracle of Delphi The Strategus keeps the pledge walking until the members have arranged the assembly room to represent the Temple of Delphi.
The room is arranged with an altar on which are a crucible of fire and a single candle. No one is in sight. The Oracle should be concealed in a nearby room or behind a curtain. The Strategus removes the blindfold at the door of the room and they approach the altar. As soon as they reach the altar, the Oracle speaks.
What mysteries have explained? What knowledge is sought in mighty Delpho's name? Till all are wafted to the Golden Shore. Strategus shows the glowing flame to pledge; gives him a graham cracker and directs him to crush and sprinkle over coals. If the graham cracker has been powdered with small particles which produce colored lights, the effect will be increased, PLEDGE Repeating after Strategus as he sprinkles crushed cracker on the fire : Great Oracle, confer I hectacomb In this fair fane, the mighty Delphic Shrine, White barley cake, not filthy goats and kine, At thy great Altar on this Grecian stone.
That I may strive and successfully achieve Some human good that greatly should be wrought; That I may attain the manliness I ought And merit here the noble Laurel Wreath, Vouchsafe to me the knowledge that is meet To fathom mysteries in this precious scroll, These living truths and principles unfold As thou has ever done to valiant Greeks.
Know then that thou dost choose both good and wise; Doth traverse the sure and certain track, In seeking for the knowledge that thou lackest Which leadeth to the noble Delphic prize. Since thou hast lighted such a fluent name And noble barley cake both pure and sweet, Symbolic of the love of valiant Greeks As hectacomb presented in my name, The scroll thou hast soon may be read with ease, By slowly passing it above the flame.
I now grant thee thy great and wise request Take it and plant it in thy noble breast And to the Assembly go thy way in peace. The pledge is now instructed to move the scroll back and forth above the flames. The English version of the motto will suddenly appear super-imposed on the Greek version. Great Oracle, my words are far too weak To express the joy that rushes to my cheek The mighty words of wisdom which thou spake, A fervent heed I evermore shall take; With determined will I ardently apply For fellowship with Kappa Alpha Psi.
Strategus and pledge now turn to go. Because thou seem to me no feeble seed Of any mortal, but of noble breed, I fain would warn thee of the enemies Who'll seek to take from thee the Delphic prize.
Vile bands of outlaws shall stow their wrath And strive to drive thee from thy chosen path. If thou are really noble, wise and true, Immortal Gods will guide thee safely through; If thou art unworthy, malignant, and base, No friend of thine shall ever see thy face. Then go full warned, with monitions depart, This Delphic Scroll bind tightly to thy heart. The guide blindfolds the pledge. Let us go, barbarian; we are staid for at the They proceed on their journey.
The pledge is walked around until they are attacked by the outlaws. Fellow tribesmen, whom have we here? Then wreak we all our pent-up vengeance on their cursed heads. There is a stranger among these Greeks.
See ye that whelp attired in milky weeds? Aye, Aye, we have no grudge with him. They ever prate of honor, justice, and duty, and go forth peering into nature's secrets as if they fain would be Gods. They are mortal enemies of our band. Avenge thy tribe, valiant tribesmen. Good barbarian, thou art no Greek. Thy tongue and garb betray thee. Why boldest thou such intimate and loving converse with these Greeks?
We grant thee thy safe escape. Get thee gone ere we impose upon them such dire and awful punishment as never before was wreaked upon human kind. Pledge tarries. Why tarry thou? Dost thou propose to risk thy life with them? Dost thou possess the secrets of the Greeks? Give us the Scroll and go thy way in peace. After some struggling, the outlaws wrest the pledge from the guide.
Great care must be exercised to avoid injury. The pledge's shirt collar-is opened and the Chief Outlaw places a noose of rope over the Pledge's head. He sees the button on the string about the pledge's neck and stops. He wears the badge for serving human kind. Kill him. This badge was won long ere he knew Kill him! Kill him! The outlaws struggle against their chief and one finally snatches the button from around the pledge's neck.
When this is done a heavy weight strikes the floor. Three outlaws fall to the floor groaning as if in agony. The other outlaws show great consternation and become quiet. Three valiant men lie stricken by unseen foe. Outlaws are still excited. ALL Rushing out excitedly. Oh, mighty Apollo, forgive us our rash intent. The Strategus and pledge proceed on their journey.
While the pledge is walked around, the members return to the assembly room which has been put in order. As they approach the door, an alarm is sounded. Strategus will perform his duty.
Strategus answers the signal in the usual manner. The Strategus enters with the pledge and remains standing in front of the Polemarch. Ye know how willingly and how bravely he gave himself as a ransom for our fellow-Greek. Upon our visit to the Oracle, he immediately found favor in the great votary's sight and obtained the knowledge which he lacked.
Upon our return, we were attacked by barbarians and outlaws who sought the Great Scroll, and although they gave him the opportunity to escape, he stood with me and contended for me with all the fidelity of a Brother. In our extremity, the great Apollo came to our rescue and smote three of the outlaws with his spear.
After this our enemies fled and we were thus able to proceed on our journey hither. The pledge is seated. The blindfold is removed for the last time and by comparing the small scroll in his hand with the larger scroll he is able to read the inscription.
Achievement through Fraternity, Knowledge and Fidelity. This is the great purpose of Kappa Alpha Psi. What say ye now? The barbarian has sufficient knowledge to read the Great Scroll. None Those in favor of the motion will make it known by the usual sign of voting. ALL Stand and hold up right hand. Strategus conducts pledge to the Altar, directs him to kneel and place his hand on the Holy Bible.
Repeat after me, barbarian, the following oath of I,………………, in the presence of Almighty God and the members of Kappa Alpha Psi here assembled, and at the Sacred Delphic Shrine, do hereby solemnly declare my unswerving allegiance to the Grand Fraternity of Kappa Alpha Psi, and do solemnly swear or affirm that I will ever respect, obey, and defend its Constitution and all of the regulations, emblems, and ritualistic work thereunto appertaining.
Worthy barbarian, because of thy proven fitness and thy declaration of allegiance and oath of fealty which thou has just made, I do now, in the presence of the Brothers here assembled, declare you to be a worthy member of the Grand Fraternity of Kappa Alpha Psi and confer upon you all of the rights and privileges that the other members enjoy.
All members come forward and congratulate the new member. Strategus conducts member into outer room where he is permitted to dress.
When dressed, he is led back into the hall and given a seat before the Polemarch. My dear Brother, as Polemarch of the Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi it is now my duty to make you familiar with the emblems, signs, and ritualistic work of the Fraternity and to instruct you in regard to the meaning and significance of them.
Kappa Alpha Psi differs from other college Fraternities in that it is more than an ordinary Fraternity. It is an organization for the purpose of Achievement. It is designed to enrich the lives of its members and to awaken within them high ideals and honorable ambitions. It is ardently hoped that each chapter will ever stand for progress and true manliness, and that each will prove a valuable ally to the college authorities in creating a healthful moral atmosphere in the college, by maintaining a high standard of scholarship, and by ridding the college of all that is dishonorable and base.
Fraternity, Knowledge and Fidelity are powerful means of Achievement. The initiatory ceremony which you have just experienced was designed primarily to fix this motto firmly in you mind. Of course, your purpose of Achievement in this case was membership in this Fraternity. You remember that, in the first instance, you were permitted to show your spirit of Fraternity by offering yourself as a ransom for a member of this organization.
We firmly trust that your Brotherly love for the members of this Fraternity will ever be such as to induce you to do your utmost to secure their safety, happiness and well-being.
In the second place, you remember that after you had manifested a spirit of Fraternity you did not possess sufficient Knowledge to read the Great Scroll of Kappa Alpha Psi. In order to overcome this deficiency you went on a pilgrimage to the Great Oracle of Delphi and besought the Oracle to grant unto you sufficient Knowledge to read the Scroll. By seeking diligently for the Knowledge which you lacked, and by fulfilling all the requirements which they imposed, you came into possession of the Knowledge which you desired.
One of the requirements of the Oracle was that you make some effort on your part, by offering of your own substance barley cake as a sacrifice on the great Delphic altar.
In your efforts to achieve for yourself a place of honor and usefulness in the world, you will constantly find yourself handicapped by a lack of knowledge to do the things which you desire. Hereafter, your college and the great school of life will be your Oracle of Delphi and will grant unto you Knowledge for every need if you will only put forth the proper efforts and make the sacrifices required. I entreat you to resolve that henceforth you will strive with renewed zeal to attain a high degree of scholarship, and a broad comprehensive Knowledge of the phenomena and forces of this great universe.
Finally, after you had obtained Knowledge and started for the assembly of the Greeks, you encountered outlaws, who, after vainly trying to dissuade you from the purpose you had set before you, and to induce you to forsake in the hour of need a true and worthy friend, tormented you with derision, scorn and threat of death.
So you will find it in subsequent life. When you have obtained Knowledge and true friends, vile men of ignorance and unworthy motives will strive to induce you to forsake them, and failing in this, will cast upon you aspersions and as much discomfort as they can.
But on your road from Delphi the Great Delphian God, Apollo, came to your relief and with his great spear slew the wretched outlaws and put them to ignominious rout. In your future contests with the evil forces of which I have just spoken you will be aided and delivered by the forces of Righteousness and the Great God of all the earth if you only manifest an unswerving Fidelity to the clan of Kappa Alpha Psi, its principles and teachings.
Now in regards to the Emblems of this Fraternity, the chief of these is the coat-of-arms, which I will now show you. Addressing the Strategus Good Strategus, put the coat-of-arms in place. The Strategus places the coat-of-arms before the new member. This, Brother, is the coat-of-arms of this Fraternity. First, you will notice here pointing to the masked head on the coat-ofarms the head of a true valiant man. That symbolizes what we all strive to be in Kappa Alpha Psi — true, upright, manly men.
We have therefore made only those changers necessary to conform with the instructions dictated by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. Elder Watson Diggs was the guiding genius in writing the Ritual and establishing the organization. He was ably assisted by Byron K. Whatever happened between her and Cord, her immediate plans were the same. She had all her records, and translating dictionaries and work to put together. For darn sure, the litter box needed cleaning out, and the milk in her fridge poured down the drain.
Naturally, when she was knee-deep in kitty litter-new and old-the cat chose that instant to drop a new toy in her path. Partially, because her body was still revved from what should have been an innocent touch, but there was more to it. JuJa Italia. Kappa Alpha Psi distributes food to community. Buy Now.
